Good pet care includes optimum nutrition, veterinary health care, daily exercise and a rich, loving environment. All pets at Hill's™ Pet Nutrition live in such an environment. We use only the compassionate, non-invasive methods needed to develop food technology so that dogs and cats around the world can live long, healthy lives. Our pet nutrition breakthroughs are unparalleled in the pet food industry, and we've built our business and reputation on always practicing the highest ethical standards. We prove every day that high-quality scientific technology and compassionate animal care go hand in hand to improve healthy pets' lives. This is why Hill supports and practices the responsible, caring and humane treatment of dogs and cats. All studies conducted or supported by Hill's—whether at the Hill's Pet Nutrition Center or outside in consumers' homes, veterinary schools, or elsewhere—must comply with the following stringent Hill policies to ensure exceptional care for animals: Hill's does not participate in studies that compromise the health of dogs: Cats are at risk. All Hill-supported studies are designed to maintain and improve animal health. No study will be conducted on dogs or cats requiring euthanasia. When studying how nutrients are absorbed, distributed, stored, used and released by a dog or cat's body, we use only veterinary research methods equivalent to human nutrition or medical studies. Hill's does not endorse or conduct studies that cause pain or harm dogs or cats. This is based on the belief that what hurts humans is also painful for dogs and cats. We only conduct studies if we have compelling evidence that we can improve the health and well-being of companion animals. These studies often lead to miraculous nutritional discoveries, improving the lives of millions of dogs and cats. We are constantly striving to find ways to reduce reliance on animal research. A large number of dogs and cats participating in our feeding studies participate in home testing. Our vets and nutritionists are skilled at developing methods that mimic animal systems. For example, we have developed and published a mathematical equation, based on the nutrient profile of a food that accurately predicts the pH of cat urine or urine without animal testing. To assure pet owners that our therapeutic foods are safe and effective, we support studies using pets with natural diseases or conditions. We do not participate in studies in which surgical or non-surgical methods are used to create or simulate disease states. Hill's Pet Nutrition Center and any outdoor facility that Hill supports must meet or exceed all industry regulatory standards for animal welfare. For all studies conducted in our outdoor facilities, we recruit and fund pet advocates, who are responsible for ensuring compassionate care for each pet, containing the key ingredients to provide exercise and a socially enriching environment. We publish the results of our studies to advance knowledge of nutritional healthcare and to help prevent unnecessary duplication of studies involving dogs and cats. Hill uses only data from animal studies that are in the public domain, either previously published or conducted under global animal welfare policy.
