Why is water important for dogs and cats?
Drinking the right amount of water is vital to the health of dogs and cats:
70% of your dog or cat's body is made up of water
Water is required for every chemical process in the body
Water moisturizes the air in the lungs
Helps regulate body temperature
Helps get rid of waste from the body
How much water should a dog drink per day?
A general rule of thumb about how much water a dog should drink is:
One ounce of fluid per pound of body weight.
So a 10-pound dog should drink approximately 10 fluid ounces per day;
A 100-pound dog should drink about 100 fluid ounces.
These dogs will drink more than other dogs, and puppies often take in more water than adult dogs.
A dog that eats wet food may drink less water than a dog that eats dry food, and an animal that suckles its young needs more water than an animal that isn't breastfed.
When do puppies drink water?
At the age of 3 weeks, the puppies begin to drink water. The drinking dishes must be suitable and the water is clean and free from impurities.
Why is my dog always thirsty?
Excessive drinking and urinating can be signs of an underlying medical condition in your dog
. These cases may include:
Hormonal disorders such as diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus
Kidney disease
Liver diseases
Oncology
fever
Some medications can also cause increased thirst.
If you notice your dog is drinking more than usual, make an appointment with your vet.
How much water should a cat drink?
Compared to dogs, cats drink less water. In general, adult cats should consume between 5 and 10 fluid ounces of water per day, depending on:
its size
its activity level
type of food
Other factors, such as general health and ambient temperature.
If you feed your cat dry food, she may drink approximately 10 ounces per day, and if you feed her canned food or wet food, she may drink approximately 5 ounces due to the higher moisture (water) content of the canned food.
When do kittens start drinking water?
Kittens start drinking at the age of 4-6 weeks. The water should be clean and at room temperature. Drinking dishes should be stacked appropriately for the sizes of the little ones.
Why does the cat drink a lot of water?
If a cat has been drinking a lot, pet owners may notice that they are cleaning the litter box more often, or that the cat is suddenly lounging by the water bowl all the time.
Many of the reasons why a cat drinks a lot are the same as in dogs; however, the most common causes are:
Kidney disease
diabetes
Oncology
Hyperthyroidism.
If you notice lakes in the litter box or your cat is filtering the water bowl, schedule an appointment to have your cat examined by your vet as soon as possible.
How do you know if your pet is getting enough water?
Other than measuring how much water your dog or cat is drinking, you can monitor for signs that your pet is hydrated.
A well-moisturized dog or cat has good skin elasticity (if you stretch their skin, it instantly flattens);
Pink and moist gums
Bright, shiny eyes and good energy levels.
The urine of a healthy dog or cat is usually light or odorless and pale yellow or clear in color.
Your dog or cat may be dehydrated and the symptoms are:
Decreased motor activity, lethargy
Weakness and lack of appetite
General weakness in the body
sunken eyes
skin dryness
***For cats:
Try the water fountain. Some cats don't like drinking from a bowl and prefer instead to drink from moving water. You can buy cat drinking fountains in our store
Offer water at room temperature rather than cold.
Wash the bowls often and make sure the water is fresh and clean every day.
Change the location of the water bowl - some cats are very particular. Try placing the water bowl near a pet's bed, resting place, or a place where there isn't a lot of foot traffic. Keep it away from the litter box.
Leave several bowls of water in different areas so that all the animals can drink in peace.
Flavor the water with a small amount of tuna juice, bone broth, or chicken broth.
Make sure to wash your "flavored" drinking bowls daily.
***For dogs:
Reward your dog with a treat and/or praise after a drink.
Add water to food like this drink and feed product or supplement your pet's meal plan with canned food.
Wash the bowls often and make sure the water is fresh and clean every day or through a water filter
