love birds :

Lovebirds are considered one of the smallest types of parrots in the world. They are distinguished as ornamental birds by their diverse and wonderful colors and are widely domesticated by many people. They are among the most popular birds to buy in homes and the least expensive. Lovebirds are distinguished by the beauty of their shapes, the diversity of their colors, and their high vitality and activity. Lovebirds love to play with their breeder, and it is easy for them to get used to it, as they are social birds, and they accept and become familiar with humans easily.

Naming and citizenship:

The lovebird was given this name because it is very attached to its partner, to the point that it suffers a lot if it loses its partner and does not accept another bird other than it. It also has several other names, such as the bird, the good bird, the cockatoo, and the scallop parrot, and in English it is called (Budgerigar). The original homeland of these birds is the continent of Africa.

Types of lovebirds:

There are many different types of lovebirds, and among the most common types are the green bird, which shares the same color as red and green, the luminous blue bird, which has a greenish-blue color, and the bluish-white bird. As for the rare species, there are the white albino bird, the mauve bird, which is black and gray in color, and there are the cobalt bird, the white speleite bird, the Latino bird, the yellow spelete bird, and the cobalt violet bird.

Breeding lovebirds:

The mating season for lovebirds is throughout the year, but most of them begin in October in the winter, and they prefer to spawn after rain. As for the age of these birds, they reach puberty at the age of six months, and here the stage of choosing a partner begins, and a distinction is made between male and female lovebirds at the age of ten months. After selecting pairs at this stage, they can be raised in groups in the form of pairs. After the breeder makes sure of the compatibility between the males and females, a new stage of the birds’ lives together begins, which is the mating stage. After the birds get together, each pair is transferred to live together in one cage, where the cages are proportional in terms of area and size, and the cage must also be made of a material suitable for the birds, the best of which is wire. One of the advantages of this method is the ability to marry specific colors from pairs, thus preserving their rare colors, quarrels between pairs are few, and it is easy to examine them this way. However, the disadvantage of this method is that it requires more time and effort. The breeding season for lovebirds begins in October until July, and during this period care must be taken to provide appropriate foods for the birds, which contain calcium, in addition to water and its importance during this period. During this period, the female lays between four and seven eggs, which she lays for twenty-four days or more. The lovebird can live for ten years

Food:

The young can be fed several useful foods during the period of their mother’s care for them or after they become self-reliant, the most important of which are grains, fruits, and green herbs. Among the important grains for lovebirds are peeled sunflower seeds, fils, duneba, and balkam, which are millet grains. This is a very useful grain mixture that can be purchased ready-made from stores that specialize in selling birds and their food. It can also be fed green vegetable leaves, such as watercress, which is very useful for male lovebirds during mating, and lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, and sweet peppers. Beneficial fruits include grapes and, to a moderate extent, oranges. As for the water, it must be changed daily, and the birds must be provided with larger quantities of water in the summer.

General tips:

The lovebird breeder must take care of the bird and make sure it is comfortable, so he must take these tips into consideration:

  1. The male and female must be separated by two cages before mating occurs. To ensure compatibility and desire between them, they are then transferred to the same cage.
  2. The cage should not be moved too much and disturb the birds. Because this may affect their psychological state, which negatively affects mating between them.
  3. Diversify the food and increase the number of fruits and green plants. To provide them with all the required elements.
  4. Provide a meal of boiled and ground eggs every morning during the mating and spawning period.
  5. Chicks need between 30 and 40 days to be able to feed themselves, after which they can be separated from their mother.
  6. The parents can return and mate again after completely caring for the young and making them independent.
  7. If the bird is weak and inactive during the mating season, it may need some vitamins given to it with water.
  8. Continuous feather loss indicates the presence of a certain disease affecting the lovebird, so it is recommended to have it examined by a veterinarian.
